IVF in India for International Patients: Cost, Travel Plan and Stay Duration
Dr. Anshika Lekhi, MBBS, MS (Obstetrics & Gynecology), The Fertilife, Gurgaon
Two questions decide whether treatment abroad is practical: what it costs, and how long you have to be here. Most clinic pages answer the first and skip the second, which is the one that determines whether you can take the leave.
The Cost Picture
What a cycle runs in India
Our published cost guide puts IVF at roughly Rs 90,000 to Rs 1,40,000 per cycle, with the wider range running Rs 60,000 to Rs 2,00,000 depending on complexity. ICSI sits higher, at about Rs 1,10,000 to Rs 1,70,000.
Medication is the largest variable at Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000, driven by your own response rather than by the clinic. Embryo transfer and freezing are separate lines.
How that compares
For context, a self-funded IVF cycle in the United States commonly runs $15,000 to $25,000, and private UK pricing varies considerably by clinic with drugs and storage frequently billed on top.
The gap is real. What matters is comparing complete treatment plans rather than headline figures, because a low quote that excludes medication and freezing is not the cheaper option it appears to be.
Planning the Trip
The part that sets your dates
An IVF cycle is not one appointment. Stimulation runs roughly ten to twelve days with monitoring scans every two or three days, and those scans are not optional, because your dose is adjusted from what they show.
Retrieval follows about thirty-six hours after the trigger injection. If you are having a fresh transfer, that lands around five days later.
Two ways to structure it
You can complete the whole cycle in one visit, which means being here from the start of stimulation through to transfer.
Or you can do a freeze-all: complete stimulation and retrieval, have the embryos vitrified, return home, and come back for a frozen transfer in a later prepared cycle. That splits the trip into two shorter visits and gives the uterus a recovery window, which has become the common approach. The HFEA's overview of IVF sets out both pathways.
Which suits you depends on your leave, your budget for flights and your clinical picture. Ask for the timeline in dates before you book anything.
What Happens Before You Travel
A good deal can be done remotely, and should be.
Online consultation, review of medical reports you already have, discussion of the likely protocol, and planning which investigations need repeating here. Some baseline testing can often be done in your own country, which shortens the stay.
Our international patients service includes a dedicated coordinator, appointment scheduling arranged around your travel dates, and follow-up guidance once you return home.
Practical Arrangements
Documents and visas
We issue medical visa invitation letters where required. Check the current requirements with your nearest Indian mission, because these change and the embassy is the authority, not the clinic.
Guidance on nearby accommodation is provided, and the clinic is in Sector 43, Gurugram, within reach of Delhi's IGI international airport.
During the stay
An English-speaking coordinator and WhatsApp support run through the visit. Appointments are planned around your dates rather than the other way round, which matters when every extra day is a hotel night.
Choosing the Clinic From Another Country
What you cannot see from a website
You cannot walk the laboratory, meet the embryologist or watch how staff speak to patients. So lean harder on the things that are checkable.
Ask who performs the embryology and how long they have done it. Ask about the laboratory's fertilisation and blastocyst rates. Ask whether the doctor you consult online is the one who will perform your retrieval and transfer, because at some centres it is not.
Continuity matters more at distance
Fragmented care across clinics and time zones is the commonest complaint from patients who travel. One named clinician who stays involved from the first online consultation through to early pregnancy removes most of that, and it is a fair question to ask before you book.
Questions to Settle Before Booking Flights
Ask for the full itemised cost including medication and freezing. Ask how many days you need to be physically present, for your specific plan. Ask what happens if your response is slow and the cycle extends. Ask who monitors you after you fly home, and how results are shared with your own doctor.
Ask what happens to frozen embryos long term, including storage charges and consent paperwork.

For general information only. Treatment timelines vary by individual response, and visa and travel requirements must be confirmed with the relevant authorities rather than with the clinic.
