Egg Freezing in Your 30s: Everything You Need to Know
Egg freezing in your 30s is one of the more time-sensitive decisions in fertility. Your 30s being too late is not the reason. The reason is that freezing at 32 and freezing at 38 are not the same thing, and the difference shows up later, in what those eggs are actually able to do for you when you come to use them. Why Does Your 30s Specifically Matter for Egg Freezing?
Egg quality and ovarian reserve both fall with age. Nobody disputes that part. What gets missed is that the fall is not a straight line. Through the early 30s it is gradual, after 35 it steepens, and after 38 it steepens again. SART data shows that eggs frozen before 35 give meaningfully higher live birth rates per egg than eggs frozen after 38, and that holds even when the same number of eggs goes into storage.
Which is why when you freeze carries about as much weight as whether you freeze at all.
Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, starts the same way an IVF cycle does:
- Baseline testing. AMH, antral follicle count, and a look back through your cycle history, which together give us a sense of how many eggs a stimulation cycle is likely to produce for you specifically rather than on average
- Ovarian stimulation, daily hormone injections across 10-12 days to bring on multiple follicles, tracked with regular ultrasound scans
- Then the trigger and the retrieval. A timing injection matures the eggs for collection, and retrieval itself takes 20-30 minutes under light sedation
- Vitrification, meaning the mature eggs are frozen ultra-rapidly. It prevents ice crystals forming, and it holds the egg together far better than the older slow-freezing methods did
- Storage. The eggs sit in cryopreservation tanks until you are ready for them, and quality does not meaningfully drop across many years of it
What Are the Success Rates for Eggs Frozen in Your 30s?
The most useful published estimate comes out of a clinical counselling model, one that takes age at freezing and the number of mature eggs frozen and reads them together. A woman who freezes 20 mature eggs at 34 has roughly a 90% estimated chance of at least one live birth from them. The same 20 eggs at 37 come out at about 75%. At 40, somewhere around 37 to 50%.
That changes the planning. Younger women may get to a sufficient bank inside one stimulation cycle, while women in their late 30s often need two to reach a comparable number of eggs.
What Does Low AMH Mean for Egg Freezing in Your 30s?
AMH, or Anti-Müllerian Hormone, reflects the size of the follicle pool you have left. AMH is one of the two main indicators, antral follicle count on ultrasound being the other, of how many eggs a stimulation cycle is likely to retrieve. An AMH that is lower than expected for your age does not mean egg freezing is not worth doing. It does mean the number of eggs retrieved per cycle may be lower, and it means acting sooner rather than later matters more than it otherwise would.
If your AMH is already lower than typical for your age and you are in your 30s, that is one of the strongest arguments there is for not waiting for the right time. Because in a lot of cases the right time, in egg quality and in quantity both, has already started to narrow.
